Apple confirmed iOS 5 is causing some iPhone battery issues, as the company aims for transparency with its customers. The Cupertino, Calif.-based company issued a statement to confirm users' complaints of poor battery life in iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 devices running iOS 5. "A small number of customers have reported lower than expected battery life on iOS 5 devices," an Apple representative said. "We have found a few bugs that are affecting battery life, and we will release a software update to address those in a few weeks." Apple's statement eases user concerns that the battery life issue stemmed from a hardware issue. The confirmation that the problem is due to an issue with the software, as well as the knowledge that Apple is actively working on a fix, will likely quell customers' complaints for the time being. The iPhone maker reportedly already issued a beta of its next software update to developers called 5.0.1, assuring it will eliminate battery life concerns. Apple's quick reaction to problems with its new handset's battery life resembles its previous handling of antenna problems with the iPhone 4. The launch of the iPhone 4 was followed almost immediately by users' discovery that holding the device a certain way dramatically decreased cell reception. Much like with the current battery life situation, Apple promised a software update that would fix the issue. However, the update did not completely solve the problem and Apple then said the true solution was to use the iPhone 4 with a case. Less than a month after the launch of the device, Apple began a free case program, allowing all buyers of the device to choose from a few different cases the company would ship to customer's doors for free. Unlike the iPhone 4 antenna issue, the software update is expected to fully fix customer's complaints of poor battery life. If Apple is able to put out a quick solution to user's battery woes, the company can likely avoid the embarrassment it suffered during "Antennagate" last year.
